Delgado Zuleta La Goya Manzanilla (375ml) NV

Manzanilla is the appellation name for a Fino sherrywhich is raised at Sanlúcar de Barrameda, a relatively cool, humid seaside village. The resultant sherry has a definite tang of the sea, and perhaps a suggestion of camomile flower (manzanilla is Spanish for camomile). Much finer, and more delicate than finos from Jerez, inland, and usually bottled at about 15% alcohol.

DZ is a manzanilla pasada, meaning it has been aged for a relatively long time (8 years, compared to manzanilla standard of about 4 ½). The wine is bottled, however, before the flor yeast can die off, thus avoiding any amontillado characters. The oyster shell suggestion in normal manzanilla becomes a richer scent of abalone, and the wine has a fabulous builders' lime streak which directly reflects the flavour of the chalky 'albariza' soils in which it's grown.

Pale yellow colour and fresh, clean apple and flor yeast aromas: racy and lip-smacking fresh. Light and vital in the mouth, bone-dry and very appetising. Drink soonest: mine was bottled in December 2012 and should be drunk within the year. 15 per cent alcohol.

We bottle and ship fresh every two months, to ensure this definitively crisp, refreshing young white wine is always in spanky form. Camomile and oyster-shell aromatics, Chablis-like mid-palate fruit, long and tangy.

I love Fino and Manzanilla. It is the perfect drink (and possibly best) to have of a warm summers night. I have tested this theory in Sevilla and also obtained equally good results in Sydney. A few of these, a quick beer, a few more cooling sherries, a cheeky beer, another sherry. Magic.  as with all Fino and Manzanilla, freshness is of paramount importance.

Aromas of sea spray, yeast, almonds and chamomile. So tangy and invigorating that the mouth starts to water in anticipation. Clean and fresh on the palate with briny salted almond and yeasty flavours and again with that lovely mouth perfume of chamomile. Finishes dry and salty leaving the mouth refreshed and ready for action. One of the best things you can drink. 94 + Points Winefront.com.au
