Head Wines the Eden Valley Riesling 2018

Classic Eden Valley Riesling with the 'Head' twist from exemplary Wine Maker Alex Head.

I have set out to make a more Germanic style Riesling and believed site selection in Eden Valley to be crucial for the earlier picked, lower alcohol, slight residual sugar style I had in mind. The rocky, limestone and slate site chosen near the town of Springton has produced just that, resulting in a wonderfully easy drinking style of Riesling.

Pale straw with slight green hues. The nose shows lemon pith and lime rind with lovely florals. Lime juice, rose water and some creamy textural notes fill the mid palate and taper off to typical quenching citrusy acidity. A touch of sweetness secures balance and keeps the wine fun and easy to drink. Perfect for fresh seafood and light salads. Drink now or up to 7 years. 10.9% Alcohol.

For the Riesling-freak in all of us 2018 will not disappoint.  It was a tremendous vintage and my favourite Riesling vineyard near Springton again came thru with the goods.  A little more acidity than 2013 and certainly more length of flavour… it could sit comfortably in the cellar for years.

Pale yellow with a slight green hue.  The nose shows citrus and floral spice.  Lemon curd and tropical fruits with long tangy, acidity.  Pure, unadulterated, delicious pleasure.  Drink now or up to 10 years. 12% Alcohol.

"Three vineyards in Springton, most vineyards planted in 40s, 50, 60s. A strange vintage for Riesling in terms of sugar development, says Alex Head. Some barrel ferment here and no fining.

Pretty, chamomile and floral, more to lemon than lime. Juicy, chalky feel, softer acidity, almost a Starburst finish, with a slight quinine bitterness to close. Likely best as a young wine.
