Shaw and Smith Shiraz 2019

Using cooler climate fruit, this wine is a modern interpretation of Australian Shiraz. Whilst traditionally associated with warm regions, Shiraz has also proven to be a star performer, when carefully managed, in the cool climate of the Adelaide Hills. Vineyards: 100% Adelaide Hills. The wine was matured for 15 months in new, one and two year old French oak barriques. The Adelaide Hills has now proven it can make truly exciting spicy Shiraz. The key is careful site selection, low yields and restrained use of oak. The blend component from the warmer sub-area of Macclesfield gives structure and richness, whilst Balhannah contributes spiciness and perfume. A vibrant, modern interpretation of Australian Shiraz.

This exceptional Shiraz illustrates why the Shaw + Smith wines are multi-award winners. A medium-bodied red, it demonstrates the beauty in balance over power. Fresh red berries including raspberry and blueberry are flavoured with notes of clove and black pepper. The palate is long and layered with elegantly fine grained tannins. Pair it with a wagyu burger with bacon, gruyere cheese and pickle

Beware the siren with the ruby-red lips. In a smoky room, here she strides – confident, cool, arresting. Slender, stalky cherry and a smear of blackcurrant bite, spiked with crushed peppercorns. No sunny smiles here, this is deadly serious. Leaner, finer and taut, it marks a big stride ahead from previous vintages. This vision of cool-climate Shiraz marks a new age of measured sophistication.

  • Huon Hooke 95 Points

Bright, deep purple colour with a fresh, fragrant, floral aroma which echoes stalky whole-bunch fermentation. The wine is sweetly juicy on the fore-palate before slightly chewy tannins chime in and cleanse the finish, leaving a clean, dry aftertaste. A statuesque wine which definitely needs more time: it's a bit chewy and grippy right now, so serve with protein-rich foods. High potential.
